Inspection & Repair

Mezuzah & Tefillin Checking

Mezuzah checking

Drop-Off Checking Service

$10

Mezuzot should be checked twice every seven years to see if they've been affected by adverse weather conditions, folding (which can cause cracks in the letters), or other defects. It's especially important to check mezuzot on the outside of a building more often, due to their exposure to the elements.

Just drop off your mezuzah and we'll have a scribe check it.

Mezuzah house call checking

Home or Office House Call Checking

$150

We'll come to your home or office to take down all your mezuzot, and return the following day to put them back up once checked — or check them on-site at your home. Our sofer ensures every mezuzah is placed in the correct location according to Halachah.

The service call cost varies by location; the $150 listed here covers the cost of the visit only. Checking each mezuzah is an additional $12 per mezuzah. For a total quote including checking, please include the quantity of mezuzot when you contact us.

Tefillin checking

Tefillin Checking — Inspection & Repair

$75

Tefillin should be checked every 3–5 years to ensure they remain kosher — many rabbis recommend annual checks. A sofer inspects for damage from water, heat, or general wear, along with any spelling mistakes, touching letters, or improper spacing in the writing.

If a problem is found, the sofer determines whether it can be corrected. Checking tefillin requires inspecting both the batim and retzuos to ensure they remain kosher. Tefillin checking tends to be more involved than mezuzah checking, since the sofer must re-assemble and sew the tefillin shut again afterward — a time-consuming process.
